Our friendly trekking team will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco bright and early at 4:30 a.m. If you’re staying in the Sacred Valley (Urubamba or Ollantaytambo), we’ll collect you a bit later, around 6:00 a.m. The scenic drive to Km 82, the starting point of our trek, takes about 2.5 hours, with a quick stop in Ollantaytambo for breakfast and last-minute essentials for your Machu Picchu adventure. By 8:00 a.m., we’ll arrive at Km 82 where you’ll meet our fantastic team of chefs and porters. After checking in at the trailhead and showing your passports, it’s time to begin our unforgettable journey to the Lost City of the Incas. The first day’s hike is a great warm-up, with a gentle 3-hour walk through picturesque villages. We’ll reach the stunning Llactapata Inca site, where you’ll explore the ruins of Willkaraqay and enjoy breathtaking views of Patallacta from a nearby lookout. A short 1-hour walk then takes us to Hatunchaca village, where our talented chefs will have a delicious, fresh meal waiting. After lunch, we’ll continue with a 2-hour hike to Ayapata, our first campsite. We’ll arrive around 5:00 p.m., where your tents will be set up and ready for you. Enjoy a warm welcome with hot drinks, time to relax, and take in the mountain views. Before dinner, we’ll gather for tea time with popcorn, coffee, and cookies. You’ll sleep comfortably in cozy tents, rested and ready for the adventures that await on Day 2.
We’ll start your day with a warm, refreshing cup of coffee or cocoa tea delivered right to your tent, easing you into the most exhilarating day of the trek. After a hearty breakfast, we’ll set off on a four-hour uphill journey to Dead Woman’s Pass, the highest point of the Inca Trail at 4,215 meters (13,829 feet). The climb is challenging, but the reward is well worth it. At the summit, we’ll pause to take in the incredible peace and beauty of this sacred place, where your guide will lead a traditional offering ceremony to the Apus (mountain gods), creating a special connection to the land. After celebrating this milestone, we’ll descend for two hours into the Pacaymayu Valley, where a well-deserved lunch will be waiting. Reenergized, we’ll continue with a gentler, two-hour climb to the second pass, where we’ll stop to explore two intriguing Inca sites: RuncuRaccay and Sayacmarca, each revealing unique stories and views. Our day wraps up with a short 20-minute hike to our campsite at Chaquicocha (meaning “dry lake”) at 3,600 meters (11,811 feet). Here, you’ll be treated to a breathtaking sunset over the Vilcabamba mountain range, followed by an unforgettable evening under a canopy of stars. With clear skies, Chaquicocha offers one of the best stargazing spots along the trail—a perfect end to a remarkable day.
With the challenging portion of the Inca Trail behind us, you can relax and savor what is arguably the most exciting and leisurely day of the trek. Today's route is incredibly diverse, taking us through a mere five-hour walk to the final campsite. En route, we'll traverse several distinct ecosystems, experience the enchanting cloud forest, and soak in the majestic panoramic views of Salkantay Mountain, the second highest in Cusco. We are set to explore two Inca sites: Phuyupatamarka (City in the Clouds), offering spectacular views of the Urubamba River and Machu Picchu Mountain, and Intipata (Terraces of the Sun). At Intipata, we'll take a moment to rest and absorb the magical surroundings. We anticipate reaching the campsite around 1:00 PM, where lunch will be served and some free time for relaxation and unwinding. Later in the afternoon, we'll visit the significant Inca site of Wiñay Wayna, where your guide will elucidate the history of this remarkable place. We will then retreat to the campsite for tea dinner, and a delightful surprise awaits you!
On the final day of our Inca Trail adventure, we'll rise very early in anticipation of the highlight of our trip: visiting Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Incas. We'll head straight to the checkpoint and wait for it to open at 5:30 a.m. As the first light of day brightens the sky, we'll embark on an hour's walk to the Sun Gate, enjoying breathtaking views. On a clear day, witnessing the spectacular sunrise over Machu Picchu from the Sun Gate is truly an unforgettable experience. Following this, we'll begin our one-hour descent towards Machu Picchu, arriving at the final control point around 7:30 a.m. Your guide will then lead you on a comprehensive two-hour citadel tour. After the guided tour, you'll have free time to explore Machu Picchu on your own or climb either Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain (tickets for these should be booked as far in advance as possible). Your guide will also explain how to take the bus from Machu Picchu to Aguas Calientes for lunch and take the panoramic Vistadome train and bus back to Cusco. The TreXperience Team will meet you upon your arrival by train and ensure your safe return to your hotel.
