Laugarvatn Fontana
Laugarvatn Fontana is located on the shores of Lake Laugarvatn, within the Golden Circle region. This historic spa has long been valued for its mineral-rich waters, which offer healing and restorative benefits for body, mind, and soul. Guests can enjoy soaking in natural pools, relaxing in the steam rooms, or for the more adventurous, taking a dip in the refreshing lake. The pools and hot pots vary in size, depth, and temperature, mirroring the three traditional steam rooms.
The geothermal activity in the area has shaped the village of Laugarvatn for centuries. Boiling waters erupt naturally in the lake and along its shores, and the springs have been used since 1929 for cooking, bathing, house heating, and therapeutic steam bathing. One nearby fountain, Vigdalaug, just 200 meters from Fontana, holds historical significance: in the year 1000 AD, some chieftains preferred the warm springs over the icy waters of Lake Þingvellir for baptism. Later, Iceland’s last Catholic bishop, Jon Arason, and his son were exhumed and washed there before being re-buried at Hólar.
Guests can enjoy the baths for a maximum of three hours. Please note that entry to the Fontana Spa must be booked in advance, as availability is limited. If you plan to bathe in the spa, pre-booking your admission ticket through the official website is required prior to the tour https://fontana.is/.
After your visit, your professional, English-speaking, and courteous driver will return you safely to Reykjavík, ensuring a smooth and relaxing conclusion to your experience.
This private transfer allows you to fully enjoy the natural and historic beauty of Laugarvatn Fontana, combining relaxation, culture, and Iceland’s geothermal wonders in one memorable visit.
