【MP】The Philosophy of Lacquer & Timeless Craft

Country: Japan

Description

Overview

Held at Tsutsumi Asakichi Urushi Studio—Kyoto’s 115-year-old lacquer atelier—this refined workshop invites you to experience urushi lacquer through a rare, tactile craft: applying layer upon layer of natural lacquer to chopsticks made from Bear’s Wood, a wild timber marked by the scars of actual bear claws, or from upcycled wood offcuts.

With each layer deepening in luster, you will sense the Layers of Time that define Japanese craftsmanship. You’ll also encounter the Durability of urushi—its inherent waterproof and antibacterial properties—and the Aesthetic of Repair, as formerly discarded material is transformed into enduring beauty.

The program concludes with a gift: handcrafted chopsticks, finished by a professional artisan. As their sheen and color deepen over time, this one-of-a-kind piece will continue to reflect your encounter with urushi—a quiet but powerful philosophy rooted in time, nature, and resilience.
