Alongside the landmarks, the itinerary includes a stop at Faxafoss, a wide, crowd-free waterfall on the Tungufljót River that rarely appears on mainstream travel itineraries.
Faxafoss is 80 metres wide, peaceful, and almost always quiet – a different pace from the busier stops on the circuit. Its Icelandic name translates as 'horse's mane', and in summer the salmon ladder below the falls gives you something to watch at your own pace. Most visitors to Iceland leave without ever seeing it.
