Located in the heart of Iceland’s Highlands, Landmannalaugar marks the beginning of the famous Laugavegur Trail and is home to some of the country’s most breathtaking landscapes. Your hike starts at the Landmannalaugar campsite and follows an easy yet scenic 4‑hour route through extraordinary geothermal terrain.
You’ll cross the Laugahraun lava field, explore the Vondugil canyon, and ascend Mt. Brennisteinsalda – known for its striking blend of red, green, yellow, and black slopes. The trail continues down into Grænagil, or the “Green Gorge,” named for the vivid green rhyolite that colors the valley walls.
With a total hiking distance of about 8-10 km (5-6 mi), this route offers unforgettable views over the Fjallabak Nature Reserve and countless photo opportunities. To end the day, enjoy a relaxing soak in the natural Landmannalaugar hot pool beside the Laugahraun lava field – an iconic Highlands experience.
