Description
Step away from the tourist trail and spend a day inside a living Maya community, where you are welcomed by a local family with a refreshing glass of hibiscus water and learn to make fresh corn tortillas by hand in their traditional kitchen.
The heart of the day is the temazcal, a traditional steam lodge used for centuries as a place of purification, reflection and renewal, and traditionally associated with the four natural elements; fire, water, air and earth. Guided by a local Maya shaman, you experience an authentic ceremony as volcanic stones release their heat and aromatic herbs fill the lodge with soothing steam. Whether you live it as cultural discovery, deep relaxation or personal reflection, it is a unique way to connect with one of the Maya’s most meaningful living traditions.
Afterwards, a short walk leads you to a crystal-clear cenote hidden within the community, where a refreshing swim is the perfect contrast to the warmth of the temazcal.
The day ends with a homemade meal prepared by your hosts: freshly made tortillas, black beans, white rice and traditional chicken pibil, slowly cooked underground; vegetarian options are available on request.
